Hi everyone today I wanted to make a post all about Gerrymandering because I think more people need to be informed of about it. I will be continuing the black history series next Tuesday.
What is Gerrymandering?
According to Merriam-Webster Dictiornay Gerrymandering is, "he practice of dividing or arranging a territorial unit into election districts in a way that gives one political party an unfair advantage in elections".
How does Gerrymandering work?
Gerrymandering works when members of the House of Representatives members allow independent commissioners to draw congressional districts for their individual state. These members make sure that the state lines are drawn in order, for their party to win all state-wide elections.
Example of Gerrymandering
Texas is a great example of Gerrymandering. As you can tell there are more republican districts than democratic, because of this Texas has always been a red/republican state. Another thing is evident in the picture above is that, the district lines are drawn very oddly, they aren't straight or even at all.
Why is Gerrymandering bad?
Gerrymandering is an unfair game that red states play, their citizens are not getting their votes heard at all. Gerrymandering also forces people to live under governors and representatives that share the same values as them. The picture above, also explains how POC feel living in these red, Gerrymandered states.
That's all I hope you all enjoyed, thank you for reading!
